Giant Taro (Alocasia macrorrhizos) is the perfect large 'elephant ear' sized plant to add a touch of drama to your decor or pizzazz to your patio. The lush green foliage stands tall to about 1m (though can get taller if its moist and thriving) creating a real statement and tropical touch that's great as an understory plant in the shade of other trees, or indoors where it gets plenty of natural indirect light. Ease off the watering throughout winter. Taro, also known as cunjevoi in Australia, is native to Queensland and north across New Guinea and the Pacific Islands, where it is used as food source; the starchy roots need to be prepared and cooked properly to become edible. When growing Giant Taro ornamentally, keep it in a sheltered, frost free position so the leaves don't tear or burn, and apply some liquid fertiliser monthly during the growing season to keep their emerald leaves looking lustrous.
