    Valentine's Day 2023 - gifting ideas

There’s no excuse to be a Valentine Grinch with an abundance of romantic gift ideas to consider.

Are you a Valentine Grinch? Perhaps being romantic is simply not a natural part of your disposition and you scoff and sigh when your Insta feed cascades with diamonds, perfumes and red roses.

Some will say it is for the young or the foolish. Some are egregiously offended if the event is not honoured and they are overlooked. And even the Valentine Grinches among us, try as they might, cannot conceal their subdued delight when approached by a stranger offloading a magnificent, surprise bouquet.

Regardless of how you feel about Valentine’s Day, it’s here to stay and before you cancel the entire event on your calendar, let’s take a moment to understand its origins in order to appreciate its symbolism and its significance.

The Saint Valentine of Valentine’s Day was one or more Christians that were martyred on February 14th 269, for preaching the good word in Rome. Though this has no connection to the tradition of gift-giving and romantic card swapping witnessed today. That was all Geoffrey Chaucer’s doing.

Chaucer, known as the “father of English literature”, created a connection between Saint Valentine and love celebrations. The first written connection between love and Valentine’s Day appears in his poem, Parlement of Foules written in the late 14 th century. He appears to have simply invented the correlation and chalked it up to poetic license.

Shortly after Chaucer mentioned love on Valentine’s Day, lovers began to send each other love poems every February 14 th and have continued to do so for over 500 years. It has become a legacy of love, even though it is unrelated to the martyrs in Rome.

Valenine’s Day may not be the most important day of the year for some, but for many it is. Perhaps we are recollecting a love lost or celebrating a new one. We must respect that and suppress the urge to diminish or discount the experience and the significance of the day for those that are missing their significant other, just as we respect those who are missing parents on their respective days of
    celebration on the calendar.

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where the most gallant of gestures and expressions of love and admiration are welcomed and forgiven. In fact, the bigger a fool you make of yourself, the better.

However, for the rest of us who shy away from romantic overtures, a considered gift is the next best option. Being shy, however, doesn’t mean being unoriginal. You can still make an impact and retain your dignity.

Cut flowers, are only beautiful while they last and the same can be said for chocolates in the middle of February. This year, make your Valentine’s Day gift a living one that will grow along with your love.

We have an endless variety of indoor plants to choose from. Why not go with an easy-care, Heart Leaf Philodendron and pair it with one of our ceramic pots or hanging baskets? Valentine Hoyas or Love Heart Hoyas are a slow-growing plant with vines that flourish up to three metres or more. If you’ve decided to buy a real living Xmas tree, you’ll want to be able to get the most out of it.

If you’ve decided to buy a real living Xmas tree, you’ll want to be able to get the most out of it.

    Top tree tips

    • When you get the plant home, stand it in a suitable saucer or dish, and give it a good drink
    • Stand the tree where it will receive generous amounts of light, but not directly in front of a window
    • Keep it away from any heat sources, such as televisions
    • Try not to place it directly under an air conditioner, as this can be desiccating
    • Always keep the soil on the moist side, to ensure the tree looks fresh, but don’t sit it in water.

After the celebrations are over, re-plant the tree into a larger pot, say about ½ as big again, which will give it room to grow sufficiently. When it first goes back into the garden, keep it in a semi-shady spot, to allow it to re-adjust, perhaps somewhere that will get some morning sun, but not the burning afternoon heat. Once into autumn, the pot can be moved into a full sun position and turned regularly to ensure that all sides receive equal light.

Following these simple rules should mean that you’ll be able to enjoy the tree for many Christmases to come.

The Best Indoor Plant For You, According To You...

We already know that indoor plants are good for us.

We already know that indoor plants are good for us. Besides brightening up our rooms, studies have found that women whose homes are filled with fauna tend to have increased levels of happiness and a longer life expectancy than their foliage-free friends.
Similarly, another study found that spending time taking care of plants and gardening was akin to going to the gym (so long, HIIT!). But despite all their benefits, when it comes to purchasing indoor plants, we have one constant struggle: which one should we buy?
So, naturally, whenever we are in such a bind, a little astrological guidance rarely goes astray. In addition to the stars, we consulted the experts at Gro Urban Oasis, a Sydney-based concept store specialising in indoor gardens, to help us get to the bottom of our plant-buying dilemmas.

    Plants & Pets

Over 60% of Australian households own a pet, and they are becoming more and more critical to our daily lives.

Over 60% of Australian households own a pet, and they are becoming more and more critical to our daily lives.  For many, the ‘fur kids’ are members of the family.  At GRO Urban Oasis we love pets too and want you to know more about the plants you have in your garden and home and how they might benefit, or harm, your animals.

Inside your house, there are lots of plants that are ‘animal-friendly’, such as Boston ferns, spider plant, bromeliads, aspidistra and moth orchids, but there are also some which are harmful, like Dieffenbachia, Caladium, Creeping Charlie, Cyclamen, Philodendron, Monstera and Devil’s Ivy.  Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t grow these plants, but it does mean that you should place them high up or out of reach.  The most dangerous of all plants to cats are lilies, so be careful with Peace lilies and cut flowers of Tiger lilies, Orientals and so on.

Outdoors, you might consider planting some that your animals will love.  Catmint, Catnip and Cat grass and PURfect for cats, but dogs also like munching on them.  Of course, dogs like grazing on grass too, so even having a pot of ryegrass can be helpful for them to munch on.  Dogs are susceptible to paspalum, and can often get itchy allergies from it, so make sure your lawn doesn’t have any hidden amongst it.  Wandering Dew can equally cause rashes and Butterfly plant (Buddleia), and burros tail (sedum) are also pet-friendly options.

Plants for PetsSome plants are poisonous too. Azaleas, Crocus, Ivy, Kalanchoe, Oleander, Wisteria, Yew, Sago Palms, Tulips, lily of the valley and daffodils.  Though typically animals are smart enough to avoid them.  If you like, consider planting some deterrents around plants you’re worried about. Dogs Bane, for example, has strongly aromatic foliage that dogs and cats are reputed to be repelled by. This herb is also known as ‘Scaredy Cat Plant’.   You could plant other strong smelling plants like rosemary, sage, lavender and thyme too, but if you’re anxious, either remove and fence off plants of concern.
